A two-month journey circling the Australian Coast has been cancelled in the wake of the fatal incident of an elderly female passenger who was abandoned by the vessel on a distant tropical isle.

The elderly woman had been trekking on Lizard Island with fellow passengers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the excursion for a break. The vessel left without her and returned several hours later after the ship staff became aware the passenger was not present.

A large-scale search operation found her remains the subsequent day.

Investigative bodies are looking into the incident, alongside law enforcement and the official investigator.

Head of the voyage organizer said that travelers and personnel on the Coral Adventurer were notified that the continuation of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous mechanical issues".

In a statement, he further stated that passengers would be provided a total repayment, and said the company was working "to organize the return journeys of the passengers via chartered flights".

Authorities also released an updated communication, and said they had "provided a notice to the Master" preventing any further travelers from entering the liner.

The official said that they would attend the vessel in Cairns upon its coming back.

Timeline of Events

The liner first departed the coastal city on 24 October, and was only 48 hours into the journey at the point of the 80-year-old's passing. Lizard Island was the initial destination on the voyage.

Travelers on board - who usually pay tens of thousands of dollars to join the expedition - were taken there for a day trip with the possibility of walking or snorkeling.

Relatives Reaction

The daughter of the deceased woman said that her loved ones was "stunned and saddened that the ship left the island after an scheduled excursion without my mum".

In her statement, she portrayed her mum as an "energetic 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking group.

"From the little details we have been provided, it looks that there was a breakdown of responsibility and basic judgment," she mentioned.

She further stated that she wished the investigation would be able to pinpoint what "the company should have performed that might have preserved Mother's being".

"According to reports from the police that it was a very hot day, and mum took sick on the mountain ascent," she stated.

"They requested her to head down, unescorted. Then the vessel left, seemingly without performing a headcount.

"At a certain moment in that process, or not long after, mum succumbed, by herself."

In a statement, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "working closely with officials to assist their examination".

He mentioned that the organization was "deeply sorry that this has happened" and had provided its complete assistance to the family.

The liner serves up to one hundred twenty travelers with nearly fifty staff, according to company information. It was specifically designed to reach distant areas of the nation's shoreline and is fitted with "small boats" - small boats used to take individuals on shore trips.

Occurrences such as this are infrequent, and passenger vessels have protocols to track which travelers are embarking or leaving, according to maritime specialists.
